On September 25-27th 145 young leaders from 80 young professional organizations representing 30 states gathered in Cocoa Beach to address the generational leadership gap and engage in dialogue around “cool” communites and the attraction and retention of young talent in our communities.

♦ A Message from our ypB Chairman

If you weren’t able to make it to the recent “Fall for the Arts” event presented by the Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA), premiering Brevard’s arts & cultural season, you missed a great time!  Did you know that there are over 43 different cultural arts organizations in Brevard?  43…this number shocked me!  As noted by Shellie Williams, Executive Director of BCA, “Brevard County is fortunate to have a renowned performing arts center, five community theatres, auditoriums, community centers and churches that host a wide variety of performances.”

BCA recently completed its 2008 Economic Contribution of Nonprofit Arts and Culture study.  Here are some of the highlights from fiscal year 2007:

o        The nonprofit arts and culture industry contributed over $42 million to Brevard’s economy and an additional $22 million was generated indirectly.
o        The nonprofit arts and culture industry supports 624 full and part-time jobs.  For every 3 of these jobs, 1 additional job is created elsewhere in the area.
o        Approximately 1 million people attended Brevard cultural events and spent an average of $20.80 per event.  20% were tourists and spent an average of $38 per event.
o        For every $1 of government support, the arts returned $20.80 in tax revenue.
o        For every $1 of cultural tourism development funding, the arts give back $27 in related spending by tourists.

If you didn’t know about the breadth of cultural landscape in Brevard, I encourage you to experience what Brevard has to offer – museums and galleries, festivals, historical offerings, the literary arts, performing arts and more.  Shellie said it best, “These groups are part of our past, enrich our lives today as the foundation of our quality of life, and with your support will enhance our community for generations to come.”

Cheers!

Dawn Hamilton, ypB Chairman
